High School Language Checklist

A high school student may have a language disability if the student has any of the problems in the Pre-School Checklist, or the Primary School Checklist, and/or has problems:

  • understanding sarcastic comments, slang and figurative expressions (for example, let the cat out of the bag)
  • recognising and enjoying implied humour
  • developing ‘critical thinking’ skills such as:
    • Recognising similarities and differences
    • Linking new information to previously known information
    • Distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information 
    •  Differentiating facts from opinions or beliefs
    • Making plausible inferences and predictions
    • Evaluating the credibility of sources
    • Identifying problems and generating multiple solutions
  •  using critical thinking skills to analyse poems, novels and plays
  •  writing, planning and editing assignments and essays
