High School Language Checklist
A high school student may have a language disability if the student has any of the problems in the Pre-School Checklist, or the Primary School Checklist, and/or has problems:
- understanding sarcastic comments, slang and figurative expressions (for example, let the cat out of the bag)
- recognising and enjoying implied humour
- developing ‘critical thinking’ skills such as:
- Recognising similarities and differences
- Linking new information to previously known information
- Distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information
- Differentiating facts from opinions or beliefs
- Making plausible inferences and predictions
- Evaluating the credibility of sources
- Identifying problems and generating multiple solutions
- using critical thinking skills to analyse poems, novels and plays
- writing, planning and editing assignments and essays
