Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding
The SOS Approach to Feeding is a program which helps to address problematic feeding behaviours. It integrates sensory, motor, oral, behavioural, medical and nutritional factors and the approach is based on the developmental milestones of feeding. The SOS Approach is beneficial for children who struggle with the sensory properties of food, such as those on the Autism Spectrum. It is also useful for children who have had a traumatic history with feeding due to reflux or gagging and choking incidences.
“The SOS Approach focuses on increasing a child’s comfort level by exploring and learning about the different properties of food and allows a child to interact with food in a playful, non-stressful way, beginning with the ability to tolerate the food in the room and in front of him/her; then moving on to touching, kissing, and eventually tasting and eating foods” (Toomey & Associates, 2016).
